What changed on March 31, 2026
IRCC announced two alternative ways to prove the host’s income. Under the first, the host and eligible co-signer can meet the threshold in either of the two tax years before applying. Under the second, a host who meets at least 75% of the requirement in the prior year may combine certain income from the visiting parent or grandparent to meet the remaining amount, with evidence.
Use IRCC’s current income table for the family size at the time you apply rather than relying on a fixed dollar amount copied from another year.
What is included when counting family size?
Family size is not simply the number of parents applying. IRCC instructs hosts to include specific household members and sponsored or supported applicants. Review the exact list and the proof-of-income documentation for your situation.
Why your policy decision still matters
A family that meets the revised income requirement must still submit a qualifying medical insurance policy. A monthly instalment plan may help manage cash flow, but its one-year term and coverage conditions remain applicable.
